蒙古南部發現新種竊蛋龍及其蛋化石(圖)

  竊蛋龍(oviraptorid)是生活在白垩紀時期(Cretaceous Period)的一種獸腳類恐龍,體長約兩米,與鴕鳥相當,尖爪長尾,行動敏捷。早在1923年第一個竊蛋龍化石被發現時,其周圍還同時發現了一窩恐龍蛋和一只原角龍化石,科學家認爲它在偷吃原角龍的蛋,竊蛋龍因此得名。一直到上世紀90年代,竊蛋龍的冤案也才得以被洗清,因爲這窩恐龍蛋本就屬于竊蛋龍,原角龍只是路過,竊蛋龍不僅不是偷蛋者,還是一種非常愛護自己孩子的恐龍。但根據國際古生物命名法規,竊蛋龍一名已經不能改變,所以該名字也被一直延續使用。

  此次科學家們在蒙古南部的Nemegt盆地又新發現了兩種竊蛋龍新種,以及它們的蛋化石。標本MPC-D 107/15出土自Baruungoyot地層中(坎帕階-麥斯裏希特階),與恐龍化石骨架一起發現的還有一窩恐龍蛋,而化石骨架也被認爲是恐龍蛋的父母。原本應保存完好的骨架化石也因爲昆蟲的的築巢而慘遭破壞。盡管如此,根據仍有的化石碎片科學家還是複原了竊蛋龍頭骨、部分前肢(包括左前肢)、腿部以及雙足的遠端部分結構。新竊蛋龍種被命名爲Nemegtomaia barsboldi,它代表了竊蛋龍類裏第四種已知的屬,該類型竊蛋龍的恐龍蛋及蛋巢在過去曾有過發現報道。

  第二種新種竊蛋龍化石標本MPC-D 107/16采自于Nemegt東部幾公裏遠的地方,化石骨架包括兩支前爪和比Nemegtomaia較小的腿節骨。這兩種新竊蛋龍化石的前爪部分保存都比較完好,而且更適應于照顧後代,無論是在孵蛋過程中還是照顧竊蛋龍幼體。但略感遺憾的是,此次所發現的恐龍蛋並不完整。相關的研究報道已發表在公共科學圖書館(Public Library of Science)網站上。

  科學家們認爲:這兩種不同類型的竊蛋龍化石代表的是連續時期裏不同的生活環境,並且有部分重疊和過渡。其它蒙古和中國所發現的竊蛋龍化石所在地層所反映的都是幹旱或半幹旱的環境,但此次新發現表明,Nemegtomaia即可以在反映幹旱/風沙環境的地層(Baruungoyot組)中保存,也可以在反映潮濕/河流環境的地層(Nemegt組)中保存。

During the early excavation of the nest, it was possible to document a lower layer of eggs lying approximately 10 cm below the body (E–G).

耐梅蓋特母龍(學名:Nemegtomaia)意為「耐梅蓋特母親」,屬於獸腳亞目偷蛋龍科,生存於白堊紀晚期的蒙古。模式種是巴氏耐梅蓋特母龍(N. barsboldi),是由董枝明等人在2004年命名。[1]董枝明等人最初將這種恐龍命名為Nemegtia,但這名稱已經由一個介形亞綱動物所使用,同樣也是發現於耐梅蓋特組。因此他們將這種恐龍改命名為目前的Nemegtomaia。[2]

耐梅蓋特母龍目前已發現相當完善的化石與頭骨。研究人員在2002年將這個頭骨歸類於雌駝龍。[3]之後,耐梅蓋特母龍被歸類於偷蛋龍亞科,可能是葬火龍的近親。
