印尼發現新品種紅毛猩猩 只餘下800隻
在印尼蘇門答臘北部，生物學家發現一種新品種紅毛猩猩，是近一個世紀以來再發現新品種。不過這個紅毛猩猩僅有約800隻，面對人類開發令棲身地減少，估計可能數十年內會絕種。
這種紅毛猩猩對大家而言可能沒有特別之處，生物學界亦一直有同樣印象。直至1997年，有生物學家到印尼蘇門答臘北部山區，巴當托魯考察時發現這種猩猩，牠們棲息在蘇門答臘島上已知猩猩族群更南部的地區，毛髮較為捲曲，頭部亦較細小。學者之後持續研究牠們的生活習性，發現更多與蘇門答臘本土猩猩更多差異。
直至2013年，學者得到被當地原住民獵殺的成年雄性猩猩頭骨和牙齒，確認更多新品種猩猩特性，期間亦為37隻猩猩的DNA排序，發現是約340萬年前牠們分途獨立演化，生物學家命名這種品種為打巴努里猩猩，研究成果發表在《當代生物學》期刊。
猩猩屬靈長類之中智力較高的類人猿，今次是近一個世紀以來再次發現新品種，學界對於21世紀還能獲得新發現都非常高興。但同時憂慮打巴努里猩猩目前只餘下約800隻，在大約1100平方公里的雨林棲息，但因人類採礦、種植棕櫚樹和大規模發展水力發電，牠們的數量正持續減少。來自瑞士、英國和印尼等各國的研究團隊警告，不再迅速採取保育措施，這個新品種可能數十年內就會絕種。 |

The disturbing fact is that most of the tropic region are suffer tremendous habitat lost. Given the current political and economical situation, the three largest tropical hotspots (Amazon Basin, Congo Basin, and SE Asia) are not doing well in the coming decades, and most of the species may go extinct before our discovery or description. |
