6680萬年前最古老現代鳥類的頭骨化石
現代鳥類是由肉食恐龍進化而成，不過中間的過程仍然有許多未知的地方。最近科學家就有新發現，相信有助了解現代鳥類早期的進化史。
英國《衛報》報道，由英國劍橋大學的古生物學家等組成的研究團隊，近日在《自然》期刊發表論文，指在歐洲發現目前世上最古老的現代鳥類化石，最遠可追溯至6680萬年前，意味這種鳥在小行星撞擊地球，導致恐龍絕種前已經存在。
這種鳥類被暱稱為「神奇雞」，牠的化石是在比利時，近荷蘭邊境的一個採石場被發現。
「神奇雞」大約400克重，體型只有半隻綠頭鴨大，面部的骨與現代雞相似，骨頭的背面就似是鴨子，而且腿骨細長，過去可能是沿住海岸線生活。
研究團隊表示，今次的發現反映現代鳥類在很早期已經開始進化。
學界過去一直認為，現代鳥類是起源於南半球，因為之前最古老的現代鳥類化石是在南極洲發現，但「神奇雞」化石是從歐洲出土，相信就刷新了學界的認知。

It is neornithine, the only surviving clade during K-Pg . beside the wonderchicken, there are only a few neornithes fossils during Cretaceous time such as vegavis and most neornithes most likely diverse after K-Pg extinction to fill the empty niches left by other dinosaurs.
Neornithes are the only bird group without any teeth and also they have a distinguish reduce maxilla and relatively large premaxilla. When you check out Dan's earlier paper in 2018, you can see that they are the only non-tree living birds during Cretaceous and possibly it is the reason why they survival the mass extinction while the other dinosaur perished |
